Investigations into the explosion of a civilian ship off Romania are ongoing. It was not a mine – Ukr Navy
Investigations are underway into the explosion of a Turkish cargo ship on a mine in the Black Sea off the coast of Romania, but it was definitely not a mine, Ukrainian Navy spokesman Dmytro Pletenchuk said at a briefing.
The incident occurred on October 5 at 12:20 Kyiv time near the mouth of the Danube, 11 nautical miles north of the town of Sulina, near the entrance to the Sulina estuary, media reports said.
“Investigations are underway to determine what exactly the incident was, but it was certainly not an anti-ship mine. Some kind of incident happened there. The Romanian side is now analyzing its causes. The investigation is ongoing, so we cannot disclose any information. From our side, the only thing we can determine is that it was not an anti-ship mine,” Pletenchuk said.
Russia can theoretically mine even near its shores, roughly speaking, but it is not yet possible to say that the mine danger has increased, he clarified, especially in such weather conditions.
