Information terrorists should be held accountable just as ordinary ones – Andrii Shapovalov on battling disinformation

One of the biggest gaps in the battle against disinformation today is the lack of accountability.

Andrii Shapovalov, Acting Head of the Center for Countering Disinformation, made this statement during an expert talk at the country’s main discussion platform BrainHub in Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.

“The biggest gap, in my opinion, is that there is no accountability for all of this. No one is responsible for misinformation. Even for the misinformation that caused the genocidal war in Ukraine,” he emphasized.

Andrii Shapovalov noted that today this issue of accountability must be raised on all platforms.

“And those who spread disinformation that led to the war should understand that they are not propagandists, not fake news spreaders, they are information terrorists. Because with modern information technologies, they are purposefully creating an information bubble that plunges a person into the same dangerous state, just as ordinary terrorists do, when a person is forced to make decisions under pressure, when a person is depressed, and when a person acts in the interests of terrorists. Information terrorists should be held accountable just as ordinary ones,” he added.

Andrii Shapovalov noted that sponsors of information terrorism or state sponsors of information terrorism should be held accountable, as well as those who killed Ukrainians and abducted children.

BrainHub is the country’s main discussion platform created by the Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform. It brings together experts from the state and civil society sectors. BrainHub hosts intellectual discussions around the issues of the post-war reconstruction of Ukraine. It’s the birthplace of the best ideas that will become the foundation for the road map of Ukraine’s reconstruction in all sectors: economy, infrastructure, education, agriculture, security, digital, etc.
