In 2025, the number of fires in Ukraine increased by 34%, fatalities rose by 10% – SES

Since the beginning of 2025, more than 21,000 fires have occurred in Ukraine, marking a 34% increase compared to the same period last year. As a result, 499 people lost their lives, which is 10% more than last year.

This was reported by Anatolii Shkarbuta, a representative of the Emergency Prevention Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SES), during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Since the beginning of the year, more than 21,000 fires have been recorded across the country, including more than 4,000 in residential areas and more than 10,000 in the country’s ecosystems. Unfortunately, we are witnessing an increase in the number of such incidents compared to last year. This is mainly due to global climate change, rising temperatures and our citizens’ carelessness with fire,” he said.

In addition to the 10% increase in fire-related deaths, the number of injuries has risen by 16%.

“In 2025, more than 490 people, including 14 children, died in fires – 10% more than in the same period last year. More than 450 people, including 22 children, were injured, which reflects a 16% increase in such cases,” Shkarbuta noted.

According to him, the highest number of fires and casualties were recorded in the southern and central regions of the country.
