ILO details training of Ukrainian labor mediation specialists in Turin

Ukrainian mediators have completed an international certification course in labor mediation organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO). The program aimed to train specialists capable of mediating labor disputes and transferring these skills to others. The training comprised three phases, one held in Turin.

During a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine, Irene Deorsola, representative of the ILO’s Social Dialogue Centre, which coordinated the program, shared details about the training process.

According to her, special attention was given to developing practical skills and working under the guidance of experienced mediators.

“We aimed to give participants the possibility to be coached and assessed on their skills related to counselling and mediation. We divided the participants into small groups of six people. Each group was associated with a coach and assessor who was also an experienced mediator. Through this process, participants could first receive coaching and then be assessed by these assessors on the basis of a matrix of competency developed by our center,” Deorsola explained.

Following practical exercises, participants analyzed their mediation approaches to identify strengths and areas for growth.

The final stage of the training focused on coaching skills: participants were introduced to facilitation techniques, designing training programs, and audience engagement strategies

According to Irene Deorsola, the ILO Centre highly values its collaboration with the Ukrainian participants and considers this program just the beginning of further cooperation.

“We gave the participants opportunities to explore how different trainings can be organized, how it’s done, and what options exist. On behalf of myself and the Turin training center, I want to say that we are honored to be part of the initiative to support the Ukrainian mediators with this knowledge and skills, reinforcing their abilities in mediation. And we truly hope this is only the beginning of a longer learning journey together,” she concluded.
