Human rights activists have pointed out the necessary aspects to speed up the identification of those killed and missing in action

As of August 2024, the Unified Register of Missing Persons under Special Circumstances recorded 2,410 unidentified bodies. During the identification process, relatives of missing persons encounter a number of problems related to the duration of the process and communication. Addressing and regulating key issues related to identification would improve the efficiency of the process, especially its speed.

This was emphasized by Olena Bieliachkova, coordinator of the groups of families of captives and missing persons at MIHR, during a discussion at the Media Center Ukraine.

“In all cases and difficulties faced by the families of missing persons, it is essential to find ways to address and resolve them. This includes increasing the number of specialists, expanding the technical capacity of laboratories, engaging the International Commission on Missing Persons more actively, improving communication with investigators, and explaining to both the families of the missing and the relatives of the deceased why the process takes so long and what difficulties, if any, exist,” Olena Bieliachkova noted.
