Fuel market losses: Fuel consumption down 20%, liquefied gas drops 40% over four years

Ukraine’s fuel market has faced steep declines over the past three years, with consumption levels falling significantly compared to 2021. Gasoline usage has dropped by 20%, diesel fuel by 10-12%, and liquefied gas by nearly 40%.

These figures were presented by fuel market expert Serhii Kuiun, during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.

“Compared to 2021, we have lost about 20% of the gasoline market, roughly 10-12% for diesel fuel, and almost 40% for liquefied gas. The decline is quite substantial,” Kuiun noted. “Diesel fuel has seen the smallest drop because it primarily powers businesses. Additionally, with ports out of operation and rail transport restricted due to different track gauges with Europe, road freight has surged—imports and exports now rely almost entirely on trucks. As a result, diesel consumption has remained relatively stable.”

Despite the overall downturn, Kuiun predicted that fuel demand will likely see only a minor decrease of 2-3% in 2025.
