Frost and drought damage rapeseed, corn, and spring wheat – despite losses, no threat to food security
Spring droughts and frosts have impacted not only fruit trees, but also grain crops. The crops most affected are winter rapeseed, corn, and spring wheat.
Denys Marchuk, deputy chairman of the Ukrainian Agri Council, shared this information during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.
“If we look at the grain crops, winter rapeseed was hit hardest because it bloomed earlier. Early-season crops such as corn and spring wheat were also damaged. Producers adapted by adjusting sowing practices, and some mitigated losses by switching to other crops,” Marchuk explained.
Despite the economic losses farmers incurred, Marchuk emphasized that there is no threat to the country’s food security.
“Therefore, there are economic losses for individual farms, but this will not affect overall food security,” he said.
