Foster families in Ukraine feel the pinch, saving on food and clothing, study finds

A recent study by SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine shows that families caring for orphans and children without parental care, whether in foster homes, family-type residences, under guardianship, or other family-style group care, are often forced to cut back on basic needs, such as food, clothing, and health care.

Anastasiia Osadcha, Implementing Project Manager of Children’s Living Places, SOS Children’s Villages Ukraine, presented the findings at the Media Center Ukraine, highlighting the financial pressures faced by these households.

“Sadly, many households have no choice but to tighten their budgets,” Osadcha said. “Fifty-seven percent of respondents reported saving up on meals, with 8% doing so consistently. Alarmingly, 23% reduced spending on children’s medical care, while 32% economized on children’s clothing. Meanwhile, 58% of adults are limiting their own clothing expenses.”
