Expert warns: Fill gas cylinders only to 85% in cold weather to prevent explosions
As temperatures drop, Ukrainians relying on gas cylinders for heating and cooking face heightened risks of explosions if the tanks are overfilled, a fuel market expert cautioned Thursday.
Serhii Kuiun, speaking at the Media Center Ukraine, stressed that cylinders should never be filled beyond 85% capacity during cold weather.
“In freezing conditions, people tend to buy cylinders filled to the absolute maximum,” Kuiun explained. “But when you bring a full cylinder into a warm room, the gas heats up, expands, and pressure builds rapidly, leading to an explosion. That’s why the safe limit is 85% of the cylinder’s volume.”
Kuiun also pointed out a broader concern: household gas safety regulations remain inadequate, with no comprehensive legislation currently in place to govern proper use and handling.
