English emerges as the top elective in NMT 2025, while physics and chemistry lag behind

English has become the most popular subject of choice among applicants taking the National Multi-subject Test (NMT) in 2025, while physics and chemistry remain the least selected options.

This was announced by Deputy Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, Mykhailo Vynnytskyi, during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.

“This year, out of 312,000 applicants, 114,000 selected English as their fourth test subject. So, just over a third have chosen English. Seventy-two thousand opted for geography. Slightly fewer, 62,000, expressed interest in biology, which is clearly popular among future medical professionals. Ukrainian literature, which tends to align more with the academic strengths of humanities students, was chosen by 46,000 applicants. These are the main figures, although other languages are represented as well,” he said.

At the same time, the deputy minister noted that physics and chemistry were the least in demand among future students.

“We are somewhat concerned by the low number of applicants choosing chemistry and physics. This year, 8,800 selected physics and only 2,800 chose chemistry, which is a very poor result,” he stated.

According to Vynnytskyi, one initiative aimed at reversing this trend is a new admissions policy designed to motivate students to choose these less popular subjects.

“This year, a certain innovation has been introduced. While it hasn’t had much of an effect yet, we hope it will in the future, the admission rate is higher for applicants who select physics or chemistry. This is our way of encouraging today’s 10th graders, who will be 11th graders next year, not to forget about chemistry and physics. These are important subjects, and it will be easier to gain university admission with them compared to others,” he explained.
