Due to an enemy strike, the Chornobyl NPP confinement has lost its isolation function – Oleh Korikov

The primary function of the confinement structure of the Chornobyl NPP’s fourth reactor – isolation – has been lost due to an enemy attack and its consequences.

This was announced by Oleh Korikov, Head of Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate and Chief State Inspector for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Essentially, the drone attacked the arch structure, first causing a direct impact that created a hole in the structure. Secondly, a fire broke out on the outer shell, severely damaging both the external and internal structures. The lifting equipment installed for future dismantling was also damaged. There are power supply issues as rescue operations are underway and some of the equipment has been disconnected due to the use of water for rescue operations. As of now, the function originally assigned to the New Safe Confinement structure – isolation and maintaining a controlled situation – has been lost,” he explained.
