Combating hate crimes and advocating for marriage equality – issues to be raised at KyivPride this year
One of the tasks of KyivPride is to shed light on some yet-to-be-approved draft laws, which serve as specific examples illustrating the lack of access to equal rights for the LGBTQ community. Particularly, this has to do with the draft law on combating hate crimes, as well as the draft law on civil partnerships.
Anna Sharyhina, Head of the Board of “KyivPride” NGO, made this statement during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine – Ukrinform.
“There are two draft laws that we are talking about as examples of the lack of access to equal rights for the LGBTQ community. This is the draft law on combating hate crimes, which have recently increased in numbers. We can see these attacks happening, particularly on LGBTQ military personnel. There is also a draft law on civil partnerships, which aims to afford individuals, currently risking their lives, the opportunity to be recognized by the state and various institutions as more than just flatmates or loved ones. And we understand that this is a very important step on the way to marriage equality, which needs a little more work,” Anna Sharyhina explained.
