Civil activists report no police pressure at ‘cardboard revolution’ protests, coordinators say
Organizers of a peaceful rally in Kyiv opposing a law to curb anti-corruption agencies, held outside the Franko Theater, said civic activists have so far faced no pressure from law enforcement, a development they see as a sign of growing trust between protesters and police.
The remarks came from Zinaida Averina, one of the assembly’s coordinators, during a briefing titled “No Batons, No Violence: Lessons From the Peaceful ‘People With Cardboard Signs’ Protest” at the Media Center Ukraine.
“As for the dialogue with the police, it was as transparent as possible,” Averina said. “However, we know that the rally was attended by individuals who were not protesters, but merely observers. They photographed everyone, though their purpose remains unclear. So far, there has been no pressure on public figures, but we still do not know who these people were. Therefore, this is something we still need to address.”
