Blend of 5% ethanol in gasoline poses no threat to older vehicles, transition to E10 may be faster than in the EU – expert

The introduction of mandatory blends of petroleum-based gasoline with ethanol in Ukraine has raised concerns among drivers, particularly regarding its potential impact on the condition of older vehicles. However, experts assure that there is no reason for alarm. The use of 5-volume percent ethanol in gasoline is safe for all engines, regardless of their age.

This was reiterated by fuel market expert Serhii Kuiun during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“Regarding older vehicles, a 5% bioethanol concentration is so low that it won’t affect the performance of any engine. In other words, it will be virtually undetectable for any car,” Kuiun stated.

He further explained that even an increase in the fuel mixture to 10% bioethanol, commonly referred to as E10, a shift that EU countries have gradually embraced over decades, could occur much more rapidly in Ukraine.

“There are no risks associated with this. I believe that E10 will be introduced very swiftly in Ukraine. We won’t need to wait 10 years, as was the case in Europe, for the transition,” Kuiun added.
