Being homophobic is still not honorable, but supporting the community has become riskier – Anna Sharygina on the new challenges facing the LGBTQ+ movement

In Ukraine, there has been a trend toward silencing LGBTQ+ community issues since the start of the full-scale war.

Anna Sharyhina, co-founder of the Kharkiv-based women’s associations “Sphere” and “PrideHub,” expressed this opinion during a briefing at Media Center Ukraine.

“I’ll speak about civil structures. Currently, there’s a trend of erasure – ignoring the experiences and challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people. Before the full-scale invasion, the LGBTQ+ movement achieved making homophobia socially shameful. Now, while being homophobic is still not honorable, supporting the community has become riskier. People fear losing benefits and privileges, politicians fear losing their electorate, and businesses, of course they fear for their property,” she said.
