Artistic practice of psychological recovery to debut in Ukraine – Sensory Labyrinth Theater
Starting this Friday, August 15, and over the following two days, Pavilion 4 at the Expocenter of Ukraine will host the Sensory Labyrinth – a cutting-edge artistic practice for psychological recovery – open from 10 AM to 6 PM. Registration for the event is ongoing, with over 200 people already signed up.
The labyrinth is designed for visitors to navigate independently. Using light, sound, movement, and touch, it encourages deep personal reflection. Each session lasts about an hour.
Iwan Brioc, author of the methodology, founder of the CoArts (Context Oriented Art) approach, Director of Research and Practice at ‘The Republic of the Imagination’ International Network, explains that the Sensory Labyrinth Theater is one of the methods of context oriented art.
“The Sensory Labyrinth Theater is an immersive theater. It’s a one-to-one multi-sensory theater. So, the audience arrives, and they go on a journey, they are travellers in a labyrinth. In the labyrinth there are what we call ‘sensory portals’, and the function of each encounter is not to create more fear – it is just to bring ourselves back to ourselves,” said Brioc.
Yana Salakhova, head of the Theater for Change NGO and practitioner of the Theater of the Oppressed, explained that the Theater offers war-affected Ukrainians a way to find their own methods of psycho-emotional self-regulation.
“The Sensory Labyrinth Theater offers a way to feel part of society, to understand oneself, and to find the strength to keep fighting. After visiting, a person gains a sense of safety despite external threats. The sensory labyrinth is an experience of returning to safety,” Salakhova emphasized.
Inna Palko, co-creator of the sensory labyrinth, civil activist, and practitioner of the Theater of the Oppressed, added that each participant will discover their own meaning within the labyrinth: “In the labyrinth, there will be separate sections where participants explore different paths to find their own insights.”
