Anti-Americanism is gaining momentum in Ukraine – Vadym Denysenko

Anti-American sentiment in Ukrainian society has become a noticeable trend in recent months and is likely to continue in the near future.

This was reported by political analyst Vadym Denysenko during a presentation at the Media Center Ukraine, where he discussed the results of a recent study.

“One aspect that has emerged as a new trend over the past 100 days – and unfortunately, we can say that it will remain one of the defining trends for the next 100 days of Donald Trump’s presidency – is the trend of anti-Americanism. This trend is so serious that I am very concerned that some politicians, in one form or another, and some political forces will try to parasitize on it, inflame it, and amplify it. And since we lack a clear vision of the future – and no one is offering one – that vision will be replaced by aggression. For a segment of society (not all) and to boost the ratings of certain political forces, anti-American sentiments will be actively exploited. In fact, these sentiments are already becoming quite significant in Ukrainian society,” he said.

At the same time, Denysenko cited sociological data confirming the ambivalent attitude of Ukrainians toward the United States.

“If we talk about perceptions of U.S. foreign policy, we can clearly say that the prevailing views are as follows: on the one hand, a little over 70% of Ukrainians believe that without the U.S. we would have great difficulties and would not be able to cope – which indicates a fairly pragmatic attitude. At the same time, 58% say that we should be more independent from the U.S. And only 14% believe that the U.S. is a defender of democracy. There are many other figures, but the main one is that almost 80% of Ukrainians believe that the U.S. cares only about itself and not about anyone else. So, unfortunately, I have to repeat that anti-Americanism is becoming one of the most negative trends. And looking ahead to the next 100 days, unfortunately, there is little reason to believe that it can be reversed,” the political analyst stressed.
