Research Presentation: How to Speed Up the Identification of Those Killed and Missing in Action

Why is it interesting?
Ukraine’s Unified Register of Persons Missing in Special Circumstances currently lists over 55,000 people—a staggering figure that includes military personnel, civilian adults, and children. The situation is worsening daily as the state struggles to keep up with identifying the deceased. Compounding the issue is the delayed processing of DNA from relatives, and the prolonged procedures for identifying bodies and remains add to the distress. The upcoming presentation will address how DNA identification works, what factors influence its success, and outline a step-by-step guide for locating missing persons. Attendees will also explore the challenges families face and how state bodies, public institutions, and international organizations are stepping in to assist.
