Over 51,000 Ukrainians are currently recorded as missing in the Unified Register of Persons Missing in Special Circumstances, a list that includes both military personnel and civilians who have disappeared since martial law was enacted. This figure may be an understatement, as it only accounts for those whose disappearances have prompted criminal investigations. Families of the missing are left to piece together information from both official and unofficial sources. The search process is further hindered by the proliferation of agencies involved, often with overlapping functions. Additionally, many families are unaware of their rights or the state guarantees available to them, a situation exacerbated by significant gaps in the existing legislation that urgently need to be addressed. On the International Day of the Disappeared, human rights activists will convene to discuss potential solutions to these pressing issues.
