In 2023, at the initiative of the Kobzar Guilds of Kyiv, Kharkiv and Lviv, the National Academy of Arts of Ukraine, the Watch Ukrainian! Association and other partners, Ukraine submitted an application to include the “Safeguarding Programme for the Kobza and Wheel Lyre Tradition” on the UNESCO Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The application will be given priority consideration in 2024, highlighting the importance of this cultural tradition for Ukraine and the world. UNESCO’s recognition will confirm the global importance and significance of Ukrainian kobzarstvo, demonstrate the enduring continuity of Ukrainian culture over centuries, and highlight the uniqueness and distinctiveness of Ukrainian identity. In support of this initiative, the project “Kobzarstvo. Epic Tradition” was launched in 2024, implemented with the support of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation by the Watch Ukrainian! Association. The project focuses on preserving, digitizing, and promoting kobzarstvo both in Ukraine and globally, in particular through the DUMA web portal, which stores audio and video materials, including lectures and films about contemporary bearers of the tradition. The portal also incorporates accessibility features for visually impaired users. Registration Form: http://surl.li/xuigvz |
