1.6 million Ukrainian children live and study under russian occupation
As of October 2024, approximately 1.6 million Ukrainian children aged 0 to 18 reside in currently russian-controlled areas of Ukraine. Nearly one in five school-age children are also pursuing their education in these territories.
These figures were presented during the launch of the analytical report, “The russian federation’s Policy on the Eradication of Children’s Identity in the Temporarily Occupied Territories of Ukraine: 2024 Overview,” at Media Center Ukraine.
“When we talk about children in the occupied territories, we are referring to around 1.6 million children. We don’t have precise data, but we rely on information from the russian federation and occupation authorities. Therefore, this number is only an estimate,” said Mariia Sulialina, head of the Centre of Civil Education Almenda.
Meanwhile, Valentina Potapova, head of Direction of National Advocacy at the CCE Almenda, highlighted that 16% of school-age children are currently studying in the occupied areas.
“Sixteen percent is nearly one in five children receiving education in the occupied territories,” she added.
