Ukraine’s gas transmission system won’t turn into scrap without transit – Serhii Makohon

There is no risk that the Ukrainian gas transmission system will not function properly without transit.

Serhii Makohon, former CEO of Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine LLC (2019-2022), stated this during a discussion at the Media Centre Ukraine.

“One of the arguments that appears in the press is that without transit our system will become scrap. I would like to remind you that transit has already decreased by 90%. We currently have only 10% of the transit we used to have. Our system was built to carry 145 billion cubic meters of gas. Now we only have 14 billion cubic meters, which is 10%. In fact, we have already lost this transit, because 10% cannot be considered a significant volume. But the system still works and will continue to work, just in different ways. We must not forget that we have our own gas production – 20 billion cubic meters of gas. The pipelines used for transit will also be used to transport our own gas, as is already happening to some extent. Therefore, the system will work, there is no risk that it will become scrap metal,” said Serhii Makohon.
