Public debt in Ukraine expected to fall to 97% in the coming year – Serhii Marchenko

Next year the country’s public debt is expected to decrease from 100.5% to 97%. In nominal terms, the amount of public debt in 2025 may reach UAH 8.2 trillion.

This was announced by the Minister of Finance of Ukraine Serhii Marchenko during a briefing at the Media Center Ukraine.

“We expect a certain reduction of public debt from 100.5% to 97% next year. In nominal terms, the debt is expected to reach UAH 8.2 trillion. Of course, these are significant figures, but we should not forget that we are a country at war, so at this stage the issue of debt is relevant only in the context of its short-term nature or our ability to service and repay it,” Marchenko explained.

He reminded that debt restructuring had been carried out, with almost 40% of the debt written off.

“Therefore at this stage I wouldn’t consider the debt as something alarming. In the near future, our debt servicing and repayment obligations will be minimal, because we have seen that it is possible to negotiate with our creditors in this way,” Marchenko said.
